Very few personal details are known about rapper/actor Sticky Fingaz. He was born in New York City sometime after the Watts riots, and lived in basically every borough NYC has to offer. But whatever unique thoughts are going through his mind at any given time, it's more than apparent they reflect his music and acting career. Joining the multi-platinum rap group Onyx in 1992, Sticky Fingaz broke into the music industry with one of the most menacing rap groups the east coast had ever seen. Never was such a high amount of energy brought to rap music before that, accompanied by a vibe that earned their first album, Bacdafucup, double platinum success, at a time where multi-platinum rap sales were near unheard of. Sticky
went on to release more albums with his crew Onyx but not without taking
an eye towards an acting career. He started as a drug dealing sidekick
to cousin and Onyx member Fredro Starr in Spike Lee's Clockers
while doing TV work on New York Undercover. His love for acting
is intertwined with his love for making music. As time went on, so did the albums and acting appearances. In 1995, Sticky and his crew released the acclaimed All We Got Iz Us judged as most hardcore Onyx fan's favorite album to date. The album showed high signs of movie-esque material due to it's dreary content, song interludes, and subject matters, which would only further prove Sticky's acting ability on the big screen. |
During this time Sticky went on to do countless TV show spots, movies, modeling gigs, and more. He then returned in 1998 for Onyx's 3rd album, Shut Em Down, with huge praise from old and new fans alike. But Sticky Fingaz' time to shine by himself off screen was in 2000, upon the release of his first solo album Black Trash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones. The album was a critical success, receiving four mics from The Source and most complimenting it as one of the most creative and energetic albums in hip-hop history. However, due to weak publicity, no club/dance tracks, and extreme amounts of delay for the album's release, the album was not a financial success. It didn't matter though, because to most who heard it, the album was nothing short of incredible.
The album brought Sticky's talent to the table, allowing him to do what he wanted. "Def Jam always wanted me to be the mad face nigga, like I never smiled or something. Sometimes I'm mad. Sometimes I'm not. I want to show the true Sticky Fingaz". The album in it's entirety played like a movie, even using Universal Pictures' theme song at the start of the first track. As listener's went through the album, they were taken through an audio-movie where Kirk Jones (Sticky Fingaz' real name) went through a part of his life.
His creativity is not only limited to music, however. Many ideas are constantly concocting in his mind such as a hip hop oriented board game he is currently producing as well as a major motion picture titled A Day in the Life, where the entire movie is rapped by actors playing in it (some actors of note: Fredro Starr, Mekhi Pheipher, Treach, and more). Also on the table is a 3rd solo album, but no one really knows what to expect in the future from the bald-headed multi talented, slightly insane and overly energetic rapper/actor.
